My favorite discoveries in the exercise were the RSS feeds and the cartooning. I am not a person who draws but I can see that I could make really cute cards and posters with the Disney characters. I really love the instructional podcasts!

My lifelong learning goals include learning about new/old quilting techniques which will make my hobby and creativity more accurate! I love the quilting RSS feeds. They have opened a whole new world. Don't have to depend totally on books when I need instruction or tips! Watch a podcast!

I was surprised that I could create a blog. Mine is very plain, but it is fun to look at other people's and the fun they are having with discoveries.

Thanks for all the challenges in this new computer geeky world, although there were times that I was not sure I'd get through them all!

Thing # 22 Media and book downloads

I used the TumbleBooks storybook because I have never used it before. It was way easier thatn OverDrive because there was no extra download to do. I think these are wonderful library options for customers and have used the e-book before.

After I get over the initial momentary dread that I don't know what to do, I can help the customer. The OverDrive Help is very good as a tutor help.

Took me a few minutes to relearn adding an RSS feed, but got a good craft one.

I think the podcasts could be used as a great teaching tool for how to use the library catalog, the Internet, and for doing an online book discussion! Book reviewing could be done on a podcast.

I looked at instructional videos on Y-seams which I will soon be doing on a new quilt. the one without sound was actually quicker and clearer than some of them with sound!! I prefer YouTube over Yahoo or Google videos--better look, to the point. Now when I can't get to a quilt store to buy an instructional book, I can just hop onto YouTube!! Cool!

I think it could be used for training in libraries and giving visual instructions on several library uses--how to search our website for one.

I am not an artist or comic writer, but I went into the Disney's Comic Creator. I chose Minnie Mouse and changed her eyes to a wink, and changed her hat and shirt. I titled it Minnie Goes Shopping, and told the short entry that she was winking because she is using Mickey's credit card. How fun! What happened to those days of copyright worries????

I think this 2.0 tool would be great for making posters with cartoons to announce children's programs.

Made a word document with an imported picture about Thanksgiving and Santa Claus. I hope very few people are following my blog--one follower is listed! Not much in my blog.

I like the Zoho Writer and can see very good immediate sharing of information, pics, etc. I am always tickled when I actually learn one of these new methods!

I find it very interesting that wikis allow for open collaborative information sharing by everyone.
Content can quickly be edited and added to constantly. There are no requirements of HTML or other computer languages for one to be involved in a wiki. Wikis democratize the process and participants in sharing new information instead of a hierarchy of limited individuals. It can cover any subject including meetings, conferences, or hobbies ad infinitum...

Wikis could be used in libraries to make changes to subject guides, get customer reviews on books (replacing OPL's long ago method of adding comment sheets inside the books!), and be a community hub of information about activities and events in Omaha and surrounding areas. The Circ manual could be on a wiki.

Library 2.0 is changing the way we receive information from customers and get info out to them.
We can interact quickly and almost "in person"/virtually. It facilitates feedback and participation and interaction by the libary customer. It's reassuring to know that OPL uses some of these new services: Virtual reference, downloadable media and e-books. Library 2.0 means to me that customers can be more included than ever before on a constant basis.
The long tail which seeks to reach more non-users by connecting to them by use technology is a boon!

Sharing of digital collections and more types of material listed on WorldCat will help libraries and users and non-users share information.
User comments like Hennepin's catalog, and changing subject headings suggested by the library
consumer can only help us to better serve users!

Mind-boggling and exciting!!!

Technorati is a very good looking site. I claimed my own blog on it. I also did searches which informed me that Jennifer Garner is pregnant AGAIN! Tried to use Michael Vartan tag which led me to IMdb. Using the tabs on Technorati I could search by Celebrity and gossip, News, etc.

It's a good thing these are social.....because I can see where I could be on my computer 24/7!! haha

I see that I could go broke looking at all the quilting sales tags!! This is fun and much work is already done by others that leads to more tags, specific or general!
For research this would be great--sharing information would be done instantaneously--no waiting for FedEx or the Post Office. I could make lots of new friends who love to quilt!!!

ps I did make a Delicious account and have two bookmarks with a quilting tag.

Thing #8and # 9--RSS feeds

I found out what RSS feeds are. Wow, what a whole new world!! I especially like getting the headline news from BBC. Being informed without effort!! I opened an account on GoogleReader because the bloglines would not function for me. Once I got on Google it was simple and exciting!!!
I now have 3 news feeds, a movie feed and scads of quilting feeds.

Lifelong learning

It's good to be reminded that learning is a lifelong endeavor. I teach myself new things about quilting all the time! I am not as comfortable with this process yet as I am with sewing, but I am determined to do this! All new things are challenges to me and I do my best to be proactive--to coin an overused word!!
Right now I need to work on my confidence in this new (to me) blog world and keep blogging along!

I looked at the pictures saved to my documents and emailed one to myself. I like the blogging to connect with other people and I consider this whole Geek process as quite a challenge. Flickr is fun for me just to look at other's posted pictures. I would really like to post my quilting pictures to my sisters and intend to do so!
